Huntington, W.Va.-The Marshall University women?s tennis team ended their five-game losing streak against nationally ranked opponents as they defeated #66 Middle Tennessee State University 4-3 in action at the Huntington Tennis Club. With the victory, Marshall improves their record to 3-5.
?I was glad the team came out and ended their losing streak against a quality opponent,? head coach John Mercer said. ?Our number two and three doubles ensured the victory and we look forward to starting conference play in a couple of weeks.?
After losing the number one doubles match, Marshall was able to secure the doubles point by winning the number two and three matches. After Jessica Johnson and Alice Sukner lost to MTSU?s Manon Kruse and Stacy Varnell, 8-4, the Thundering Herd responded with two victories to gain the doubles victory. Ahley Kroh and Lille Nzudie defeated Jennifer Klaschka and Carien Venter 8-3, while Danielle Hock and Meghan Skalsky defeated Laura McNamara and Emily Vest 8-1 to ensure the doubles point.
With the doubles point, the Thundering Herd needed only three singles victories in order to end their losing streak. The team responded with victories in the number two, five and six singles slots. Marshall?s Sukner defeated Klaschka 6-3, 6-2, while Kroh defeated McNamara 6-3, 6-3 and Joelle Good defeated Vest 6-2, 6-2.
Marshall will return to action when they host conference foe Miami-Ohio on Friday, February 28, at 1:00 p.m.
