CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Marshall University softball team used 11 hits to dispose of the University of Akron Zips on Saturday afternoon at the UTC Frost Classic. The contest was called due to the mercy rule after the sixth inning as the Herd held a commanding 11-3 lead.
Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, GA) got the Herd started in the top of the first, hitting a deep fly ball the Akron left fielder dropped, landing the fleet footed Williams on second. De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, CA) came up next and blasted a shot down the left field line that scored Amanda Williams. Allison Webb (Wayne, WV) lined a shot to right field and forced the second Zip error of the inning, allowing Drake to score and giving the Herd a 2-0 advantage at the outset.
Sierra Davenport (Tucson, AZ) started a two out rally in the top of the third with a solid base hit to center field. Davenport stole second and Drake doubled to right center for the RBI. Webb knocked a long single to score Drake from first. Leigh Wintter?s (Acworth, GA) followed with a blast off the center field wall to send Webb home and increase Marshall?s led to 5-0.
Akron (3-3) countered in the fourth scoring three runs on three hits, including a pair of doubles to make the score a tight 5-3. The Herd came right back in the top of the fifth to score four runs. Akron?s pitcher issued four free passes and Drake and Davenport again came through with hits to help the Herd.
Davenport continued to wreak havoc on the Zip defense, placing a bunt for a base hit and then stealing second base. Amanda Williams knocked in Davenport with a strong single to right center field, moved to second on the throw to the plate and took third on a wild pitch. Drake then walked and stole second, but Amanda Williams was thrown out at the plate. Wintter then drove a deep sacrifice fly that scored Drake from third and tallied the final Herd run of the day.
Marshall?s Drake improved her record to 2-1 on the mound, scattering three hits and striking out two batters. Randi Nielson (Tucson, AZ) earned the save, pitching two innings, giving up only one hit and striking out four.
Davenport and Drake each went 3-for-4 at the plate and scored seven runs between them.
Marshall (8-4) will square off against Samford University Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in Frost Stadium. The Herd will play its final contest of the Frost Classic Sunday at 12:15 p.m. versus Western Kentucky University.
