CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Marshall University softball team took care of business on Saturday morning, downing Tennessee State. The Herd used 12 hits and perfect defense to beat the Tigers, 8-1.

Tennessee State (2-5) got on the board first with a pair of singles in the top of the first inning. The Herd countered in the bottom half of the inning with a run of its own. Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, GA) started off the ining with a walk. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, AZ) and Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, GA) both followed with perfect bunt singles to load the bases for De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, CA). Drake came through with a sacrifice fly to score Amanda Williams from third and tie the score at one after one.

The leadoff trio of Williams, Davenport and Williams struck again with a base hit apiece to knock in a pair of runs for the Herd. The two then executed a perfect delayed steal with a great slide by Kacenga to aviod the catcher?s tag and score the go ahead run for the Herd. Amanda Williams then singled to score Jessica Williams, but Davenport was cut down at the plate for the final out of the inning.

MU?s Leigh Wintter (Acworth, GA) blasted a double to left center and Huntington?s Karri Britt singled, but Marshall could not get the run in and the score remained 3-1 after three complete innings. A spectacular diving catch by Davenport in right field helped the Herd hold off a Tiger threat in the fourth inning an gave Marshall some momentum heading into the fourth. Kacenga started things off for the Herd again, reaching base on a Tiger error. Jessica Williams followed her with a walk and Davenport reached on an infield single. Three Tiger errors and an Allison Webb (Wayne, WV) single plated four runs in the inning for the Herd and made the score 7-1.

Davenport remained perfect on the game with another single in the sixth, before stealing her way all the way to third. Amanda Williams added another RBI to her tally, knocking in Davenport with a hard single to center. Wintter lined another hard single, but Marshall couldn?t push another run across. The Herd took care of business on defense in the bottom of the inning and won by the final of 8-1.
