3/13/2003

TAMPA, Fla.- The Marshall University women's golf team competed in the first round of its spring season Thursday at the Snowbird Intercollegiate hosted by Northern Illinois University. Marshall shot 346 as a team after the first day.

"Condsidering the amount of time we have had on the course the girls were grinding it out today," assistant golf coach Meredith Knight said. "We are going to get better with each round."

James Madison University is the overall field leader after one full day of competition, shooting a 295 as a team. The 21 team field includes several Mid-American Conference schools. The University of Toledo leads the MAC schools, tied for second place overall with Southern Mississippi University with a 307. Ball State is shooting 330, Bowling Green 346 and the host Northern Illinois 344.

The Herd will return to action tomorrow as it competes in the final round of the Snowbird Intercollegiate. The team will then travel to Citrus Springs, Fla. to host the El Diablo Intercollegiate. The men's El Diablo will take place on the 15th and 16th with the women's tournament held on the 17th and 18th.
