CHATTANOOGA, TN - The Marshall University softball team fell to the Hilltoppers of Western Kentucky, 11-1 on Sunday afternoon.
The Hilltoppers (4-7) drew first blood, scoring six runs in the top of the first. WKU had only three hits, but drew five walks to help them build a formidable lead.
WKU added to their lead in the second with a home run off the bat of Krystalyn Smith plating two runs for the Hilltoppers. Shelly Floyd hit another long ball for Western Kentucky in the third, this time in the fashion of a three-run dinger to put the WKU up 11-0 after three.
The Herd threatened in the fourth with singles by Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, GA) and Karri Britt (Huntington, WV), but could not get a run in. Marshall did finally push a run across in the fifth when Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, AZ) and Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, GA) singled and Williams came in to score on an Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, GA) ground out.
Marshall (9-5) will host the Radisson Softball Classic next weekend at Dot Hicks Field. Play will begin Friday as Cleveland State University, the University of Dayton and Morehead State University travel to Huntington.
