Marshall Wins Six Straight to Take Radisson Softball Classic Championship

Sierra Davenport went 15-20 at the plate and stole eight bases on the weekend to help lead the Herd to victory.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall Thundering Herd softball team won all six of its contests over the weekend to win the Radisson Softball Classic Championship. The Herd improves its record to 15-5 overall, the team?s best start in eight years. Marshall defeated Morehead State University, 11-1 in Sunday?s first contest and took care of the University of Dayton, 8-1 in the night cap.

The Herd, acting as the visting team, scored three runs in the top of the first inning against the Eagles of Morehead (2-6) and never looked back. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.), Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Allison Webb (Wayne, WV) each lined singles to score the three runs.

The second inning was more of the same with Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, NV) coming around to score on a sacrifice fly by Williams after leading off the inning with a walk.

All was quiet until the fifth inning when Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) and Spenia combined two singles to produce another Herd run.

The Herd exploded i n sixth, scoring six runs on six hits to blow the game wide open, 11-0. Morehead countered in the bottom of the inning, but could only muster one run before their final runner was gunned down at the plate.

Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) earned the complete game victory, moving her to 3-2 on the season. Chamberlain gave up only two hits to the Eagles, both of which came in the bottom of the last inning. The Herd had 13 hits in the contest. Davenport led the team, going a perfect 4-4 at the plate. Sarah Wilson (Parkersburg, WV) went 2-for-3, including a solo bomb to center. Wintter and Spenia each had two hits in the contest for the Herd.

Against Dayton (4-4), Marshall again jumped out to a lead, scoring two in the top of the first. The leadoff trio of Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.), Davenport and Amanda Williams loaded the bases. J. Williams and Davenport came in to score on a pair of sacrifice flys by Drake and Wintter. The Herd added another run in the third as Davenport reached base, stole her way to third and scored on a hit by Webb.

The Flyers scored their only run of the game in the fourth when they were able to string together three singles.

Marshall?s entire team continued to swing the hot bat, adding another run in the fourth and the fifth. In the sixth Webb stroked a three run home run to put the Herd up 8-1.

Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) improved her record to 8-2 on the season, giving up only three hits and one earned run on the game. Davenport continued her perfect ways, going 4-for-4 again in the second contest. Amanda Williams collected three hits and Spenia had two of the Herd?s 13 hits.

The Flyers of Dayton took second place in the Radisson Softball Classic, going 3-3 on the weekend. The Thundering Herd went a perfect 6-0 and took the championship. Marshall is now 15-5 on the season and will head to Rock Hill, SC to compete in the Winthrop Invitational on Friday, March 14th.
