Women's Tennis Claims Second Consecutive MAC Championship
4/27/2003
Ypsilanti, Mich.-The Marshall University women?s tennis team captured their second consecutive Mid-American Conference Tournament championship with a 4-2 victory over Eastern Michigan University. The win gives the Thundering Herd a berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Like in every other conference match this season, the Thundering Herd opened by winning the doubles point. The tandems of Ashley Kroh and Lille Nzudie, playing in the number two position, and Meghan Skalsky and Danielle Hock, playing in the number three position, posted convincing wins to capture the point. Kroh and Skalsky defeated Kendra Clark and Ying Kansuthi 8-5 while Skalsky and Hock posted a 8-2 victory over Amalia Lincaru and Shari Gimarnick.
After Eastern Michigan posted straight set wins in the number one and two position to grab a 2-1 lead, Marshall responded with victories in the number three, five and six positions to clinch the championship. Victories by Nzudie (7-5, 6-4 over Lincaru) and Good (6-3, 6-2 over Gamarnik) gave the Thundering Herd a 3-2 lead and left the team one point away from the championship. Hock responded with a thrilling three set victory over Kansuthi to give Marshall the championship.
Marshall moves to 19-7 on the year and will now wait for the NCAA Tournament pairings to be announced on Wednesday, April 30. The pairings can be seen live at 4:30 p.m. on ESPNews.
