OXFORD, Ohio- The Marshall University Thundering Herd Softball Team defeated the RedHawks of Miami University (Ohio) Sunday on a cold Miami Softball Field, 4-1. Marshall moves to 28-10 overall on the season with the win and is 9-2 in the Mid-American Conference.

Marshall took an early lead as Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) leadoff with a triple to leftfield and scored on an errant throw by the RedHawks.

Miami came right back to tie the game with a run off three singles and a walk in the bottom of the first. The RedHawks starting pitcher, Jackie Poggendorf collected the RBI single, but the Herd cut down the runner trying to take third and ended the Miami threat.

In the third, the Herd scored a single run to take the 2-1 lead. Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) slapped a single and moved to third when Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) lined a hit to left-center field. De?Shaun Drake (Spring Valley, Calif.) picked up her 36th RBI of the season, bringing Davenport home on with a ground ball to the right side.

The Herd?s senior catcher, Karri Britt (Huntington, W.Va.), stroked her second home run of the season over the left field fence in the fourth to make the score 3-1 in favor of the Herd.

Marshall used its speed to produce a two out rally in the sixth and get a little insurance. Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) lined a two out single to get things going. Jessica Williams laid down a bunt for a base hit and Kacenga took third on the play. Davenport then legged out an infield hit, allowing Kacenga to score and push Marshall?s lead to 4-1.

Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) gave up four hits and struck out five batters in route to picking her MAC leading 17th victory of the season. MU?s nine, one and two hitters, Kacenga, Jessica Williams and Davenport, combined for six hits in the contest.

Marshall will take its quest for a MAC championship to the University of Toledo as they take on the Rockets on Wednesday, April 9th at 1:00 p.m.
