SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - Marshall University's men's golf team finds itself trailing the rest of the pack after three rounds at the Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Championships.
The Thundering Herd, along with the rest of the field, has battled some adverse weather conditions over the past two days. The first round was suspended Thursday after rain delays pushed the tournament into night fall. Those events led to the completion of the first round and rounds two and three being played Friday.
Marshall is 10th after shooting rounds of 322, 311, and 311 (944). The Thundering Herd is, however, only five strokes back of Northern Illinois and within 24 strokes of sixth place Eastern Michigan.
Only six strokes seperate first place Miami (883) from third place Toledo (889). Kent State is holding down the number two spot at 886, setting up what should be an entertaining fourth and final round Saturday.
Ball State's Brandon Boomsma is clinging to a one stroke lead over three others in the race for the individual title (73,75,70=218).
Marshall's strongest individual thus far has been Hurricane, W.Va., native Drew Whitten. Whitten is tied for 24th after shooting rounds 78, 76, and 77 (231). The Herd's Ben Minyard is three strokes back at 234 (t-31).
The tournament concludes tommorrow with the fourth and final round getting underway at Rich Harvest Farms at 8:00 a.m.
