Jamaal Whyce Hopes to Bolster Marshall's Defensive Front

8/13/2003

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Junior Defensive lineman Jamaal Whyce's road to Marshall has been a long one.

Whyce, a 2000 graduate of Miami Central High in Miami, Fla. and prep teammate of Buffalo Bills rookie Willis McGahee, originally signed with Auburn , but landed at Hargrave Military Academy. Out of Hargrave, the 6-foot-2, 280-pound lineman, then signed with Arkansas before moving on to Butler Community College in Kansas.

Whyce now finds himself adjusting to life at the Division I-A level.

"It is definetly harder than junior college," Whyce said of practices at Marshall. "There is a lot more running at a higher speed and a higher intensity level."

Despite the added difficulty, Whyce appears to be progressing nicely.

"I am very pleased with Jamaal," Marshall defensive Coordinator Bill Wilt said. "He is learning fast and he has good mental and physical toughness."

Whyce plans to be a factor this season on the Herd's defensive front and coach Wilt says he expects nothing less.

"I hope I can get into the rotation and contribute," Whyce said. "I feel like I am catching up and I am going to do all I can to help the team."

"I expect big things out of him," Wilt said. "Thats why he is here. We didn't bring him in to be a manakin."

Whyce took part in both of Marshall's practices Wednesday. The Herd practiced from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and again from 4:30 p.m. to about 6:00 p.m. in warm sunny conditions.

Thursday's practice is scheduled to run from 4:30 to 6:30 at Marshall Stadium.
