HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Stan Hill was nearly perfect as Marshall University's football team closed out preseason drills Saturday with a simulated game.
"I thought the mock game today went well," Hill said. "I'm just looking forward to getting the season started. Hopefully this will carry over to the Hofstra game."
Marshall's starting quarterback was an impressive 15 of 17 for 264 yards and three touchdowns. The junior hit Brad Bates for an eight-yard score, Josh Davis on a 20-yard touchdown pass, and found Jason Rader for yet another score in the simulated game.
The coaching rotated players in and out throughout the afternoon, working on substitution patterns and play calling, however Hill managed to impress despite the constant shuffling of players and units.
"I'm ready to go out there without the Byron Leftwich saftey net," Hill said. "I'm looking forward to just my second career start. This is my team now. I have put the work in and we are ready to get the season underway."
Other highlights from the nearly two hour practice included a 55-yard touchdown pass from punter Klint Rose to Rader, a Paul Sinclair interception of a Tim Bessolo pass that he tipped at the line and brought in, and Brad Bates's six catches for more that 110 yards.
Marshall's players will take Sunday off before returning to the usual game week schedule Monday. The Thundering Herd is scheduled to practice Monday from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
