Aggie Classic Next Stop for Herd Volleyball

9/11/2003

Marshall will attempt to end a three-match losing streak this weekend when the Thundering Herd volleyball team travels to Greensboro, N.C., for the Aggie Classic to be held at the Corbett Sports Center from Sept. 12-13.

The Aggie Classic, hosted by North Carolina A&T, will mark the third season-opening tournament in as many weekends for the Herd (2-4), who took home the team title at the Indiana State Tournament before dropping all three matches at last weekend?s Bearcat Invitational to a trio of robust teams in New Mexico State, Butler and host Cincinnati.

Marshall?s opening match will pit the Herd against the Panthers of High Point University at 11 a.m. on Friday. MU is a perfect 4-0 versus High Point, including last season?s 3-1 victory at the UNC Greensboro Tournament.

The host Aggies of NC A&T face the Herd later on Friday at 5 p.m. NC A&T?s Arlene Mitchell was selected as MEAC Rookie of the Week for her performance at the William & Mary Invitational last weekend. Mitchell, a 5-9 outside hitter had 37 kills, 33 digs, 11 aces and six blocks to lead A&T to a 2-1 record.

Marshall is 5-0 lifetime versus NC A&T.

Saturday?s playing schedule matches the Herd up with Savannah State at 9 a.m. and with Gardner-Webb at 3 p.m. Marshall has never faced either of its Saturday opponents.

Leading the way for the Herd thus far in the young season is Nicole Michal (Louisville, Ky.). The senior currently stands in eighth place in the Mid-American Conference in hitting percentage (.292) and was named an all-tournament selection in each of the Herd?s first two tournaments.

Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) is eighth in the MAC in assists per game (10.73) for a total of 236, and is second in service aces per game (.68). In fact, only Toledo has recorded more service aces as a team than Marshall, 63 to 56, respectively.
