BIRMINGHAM, Al. - The Thundering Herd Men's men's soccer team lost a close game to the UAB Blazers, 2-1.
The Herd played a strong game, taking the lead on a goal scored by Karim Boukhemis. Boukhemis, a Huntington native, scored the first goal of his collegiate career. He scored on a kick from 18 yards out to take the lead. The goal was unassisted and scored at the 35:38 mark of the first half. The lead was short-lived for the Herd as UAB tied the game less than a minute later.
The two teams went into the half tied at 1, but the Blazers came out shooting in the second half tallying up 14 shots and scoring the game-winning goal at the 75:59 mark.
Scoring the goals for the Blazers were Leandro De Oliveira and Jose Rayo. Jerson Monteiro had two assists. The Blazers outshot the Herd, 24-5 for the game, but strong game by Marshall goalie Joe Nebel kept the game close.
The Herd put up a strong effort against the #12 team in the country, but fell short. Despite the loss, Coach Bob Gray remained optimistic. "It was one of our best performances of the year. The team played a solid game, but things just ended up going their way."
Marshall continues play in the Birmingham Southern Tournament on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 when they face off against Birmingham Southern.
