  • Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Al. - The Marshall University men's soccer team lost to the Birmingham Southern Panthers in overtime, 2-1.

The Herd took the lead at the 60:26 mark of the game on a goal scored by Kirk Gibson. He was assisted by Clayton Cochrane. The Panthers tied the game at the 84:35 mark on a goal scored by Nick Barcelona.

The game went into overtime and on their first shot of the overtime period, the Panthers scored the game-winning goal. Karim Dietz was the goal scorer.

Marshall head coach, Bob Gray, was disappointed with the result. "To be up 1-0 with five minutes remaining and lose is very disappointing. The team looked tired and got outplayed, but it is still a tough way to lose the game."

Marshall got outshot 27-14 for the game, but a strong effort put forth by MU goalie Joe Nebel kept the game close. Nebel made 11 saves in the game. Coach Gray was proud of the effort he made. "Joe played outstanding and kept us in the game, he made the saves to keep the game close."

Kirk Gibson, Firas Al-Samarraie and Granit Caushaj led the team with three shots each.

The Herd will resume play on Friday night when they start play in the William & Mary Tournament. Coach Gray knows that this tournament will be very challenging. "We will be playing two nationally ranked teams, so we have a lot of work to do. We need to take care of the ball better and find a way to keep a lead when we have it."

Marshall plays William & Mary on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. They go on to face Old Dominion on Saturday afternoon at 4:30. The tournament will mark the end of their season high five game road trip. The team returns home on Friday, September 26 when they begin conference play against Western Michigan.
