HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The William & Mary Tribe men's soccer team beat the Thundering Herd on Friday night 4-1 at Sam Hood Field.
The Tribe started off strong, taking a 2-0 lead only six minutes into the game. Patrick Scherder of the Tribe score at the 5:17 mark and Graham Albert scored at the 6:19 mark putting the Herd behind early in the game. Andreas Nydal got the assist on the first goal. Wiliam & Mary struck again at the 11:13 mark as Patrick Scherder scored his second goal of the game. He was assisted by Graham Albert.
Firas Al-Samarraie scored the only goal for Marshall at the 27:41 mark. He was awarded a penalty kick, but Tribe goalie Kris Rake made the save and gave up a rebound, which Al-Samarraie kicked in for the goal.
At the 75 minute mark, the Tribe extended their lead to 4-1 on a goal scored by Jarrett Thomas and assisted by Phil Hucles. The Tribe outshot the Herd 25-7. Phil Hucles led the Tribe in shots with seven. Firas Al-Samarraie led the Herd with four shots.
It was a tough start for Marshall, but the team pulled it together to keep the game close. Coach Bob Gray was disappointed with the loss, but happy with the effort the team put in. "We played a great team, we came out flat and had to come from behind. We gained some momentum, but were just unable to get back in the game. The bench played pretty well, but William & Mary was just a faster, more athletic team."
Marshall has a week off before their next game on Friday, Sept. 26 against Western Michigan. That game marks the opening of the conference schedule for the Herd. The game starts at 6:00 p.m.
