Football Travels to Troy State Saturday

9/22/2003

Marshall, coming off of a historic win at sixth-ranked Kansas State, now turns its attention to its final non-conference game of the season -- a Saturday night meeting with Troy State University at the newly renovated, $18-million Movie Gallery Stadium.

The Trojans opened their newly renovated home last week with a 28-0 win over Southeastern Louisiana. The Trojan defense held SELU to -22 yards rushing in the contest, while the TSU offense rolled up 217 yards on the ground en route to the victory.

Troy State is now 158-70-4 all-time in Movie Gallery Stadium and owns an impressive 56-8-1record at home under Larry Blakeney.

TSU is also in the midst of a two-game winning streak after topping C-USA member UAB, 20-9, on the road prior to last weekend?s win over Southeastern Louisiana. The Trojans opened the season with a 41-5 loss at Kansas State and a 48-7 loss at Minnesota.

The game will be the fourth meeting all-time between the two schools, however this will be the Herd?s first trip to Troy State. The Thundering Herd is 3-0 against the Trojans with a 24-21 win in 1993, a 42-12 win in 1998, and a 24-7 win last season.

Last season, Byron Leftwich led Marshall to a 24-7 win by completing 23 of 35 passes for 275 yards and two touchdowns. The Thundering Herd defense recorded five sacks and limited TSU to only 164 yards of total offense. Despite the loss, Troy State did manage to limit the Thundering Herd to a season-low 365 yards of total offense in that game.
