TROY, Ala. (Sports Network) - DeWhitt Betterson ran for 114 yards and a score on 17 carries in leading the Troy State Trojans to an upset 33-24 victory over the Marshall Thundering Herd in non-conference action from Movie Gallery Stadium.

Marrio Fraser also had solid game for the Trojans (3-2) with 81 rushing yards and a score on 12 carries. Aaron Leak completed 5-of-15 pass attempts for just 59 yards, but ran for 59 more on 12 carries.

Stan Hill, who entered the game with less than seven minutes to go in the first half, paced Marshall (2-3) by completing 25-of-39 pass attempts for 266 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions. Josh Davis was his main target, catching 12 balls for 177 yards and a score.

Marshall's Darius Watts added nine receptions for 75 yards and a touchdown. With his nine catches he ties Western Michigan's Steve Neal for first place all-time in the Mid-American Conference history books for career receptions with 235.

Marshall got on the board first with a 33-yard field goal by Ben Lewis midway through the first quarter.

The Trojans quickly responded with a Jermaine Richardson 36-yard touchdown pass to Jason Samples late in the first period.

Thomas Olmsted then knocked through a 38-yard and 36-yard field goal, giving Troy State a 13-3 lead late in the second quarter.

The Herd cut the deficit to three points just before the break with a Jason Rader two-yard touchdown reception from Hill.

Marshall then grabbed a 17-13 lead with a Davis 79-yard touchdown catch from Hill late in the third quarter.

Troy State quickly responded with a Betterson three-yard touchdown run, giving it a 20-17 advantage heading into the fourth period.

Derrick Ansley then returned an interception 70 yards for a touchdown, while a failed extra point left the Trojans leading, 26-17.

Marshall pulled within two points midway through the fourth quarter behind a Watts' 15-yard touchdown reception.

The Trojans closed the scoring with a Fraser 27-yard touchdown run late in the fourth period, giving them the nine-point victory.

Troy State outgained Marshall 254-98 on the ground, in addition to forcing it into four turnovers.
