Women's Tennis to Face Kentucky in 2004 Opener

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University women?s tennis team will begin their quest for a third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance when they open the 2004 season on Saturday, January 24, against the University of Kentucky at 10:00 a.m. at the Hilary J. Boone Indoor Tennis Center.

The Thundering Herd, ranked 69th in the country by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, enters the season as the defending back-to-back Mid American Conference Champions. Last season, Marshall went 19-8 and captured their second consecutive MAC Tournament championship, before falling to the University of South Alabama 4-2 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Marshall is led by senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) who enters the season ranked 63rd in the country in singles. In addition, the doubles team of Johnson and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) enter the matches ranked an impressive 14th in the country.

Kentucky enters the match with a record of 2-0, recording victories against Murray State University (6-1) and the University of Louisville (7-0) last week.
