HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - Junior Jared Dombrowski (Pickerington, OH) scored 12 minutes into the first half to give the Thundering Herd all of the offense it would need to defeat the Longwood Lancers, 2-0, Sunday at Sam Hood Field.

The win for Marshall (7-5-2, 2-2-1 MAC) marked the second shutout win of the weekend for the team and helped them to surpass their win total of six from 2003.

The Herd jumped out on Longwood (1-12-0) with Dombrowski's goal early in the first half. Both teams had numerous offensive chances in the first period, with Marshall taking ten shots and Longwood having seven.

Just over two minutes into the second half, Huntington native Karim Boukhemis (Huntington, WV) put the game out of reach with his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Longwood goalie Matt VanOekel fumbled a corner kick and Boukhemis knocked in the rebound for the goal.

Just a few minutes after the goal, Todd Runey received a red card for the Lancers, meaning that they would have to play one man down. They remained competitve, registering five shots in the second half, but the Herd defense and the strong goaltending of sophomore Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, IN) was too much for Longwood to overcome as Marshall took the game, 2-0.

Marshall had 17 shots on the day, while Longwood had 12. Boukhemis led the team with five shots while John Daniele (Columbus, OH) and Salvador Djeukeng (Yaounde, Cameroon) each had two. Terhune earned the win and made six saves en route to the shutout. VanOekel made eight saves in the game.

Herd coach Bob Gray was pleased with the win, but knows the team must improve going into the Mid-American Conference Tournament. "Any time you can get a win, you have to be happy, but to lose starters to injuries and cautions puts us in a tough situation," Gray said. "Longwood played us tough, but we had some guys step up today to help us get the win."

Up next for the Herd will be VMI. The start time for that game has been changed to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Sam Hood Field. On Friday, the Herd will travel to Dayton, OH to take on Wright State before returning home for the team's final regular season game in the MAC on Sunday against Buffalo. Kickoff is slated for 1 p.m. at Sam Hood Field.
