Trio of Herd Tennis Standouts Head to ITA East Regionals
10/21/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Marshall senior women?s tennis players Ashley Kroh, Danielle Hock and Joelle Good will compete in the Wilson/Intercollegiate Tennis Association Eastern Women?s Regional Championships October 22-26, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
Good will take the courts first for the Herd Friday at 8 a.m. in the singles qualifying draw, while Kroh and Hock won?t play until the main draw is announced Friday at noon.
?This is always a great tournament and we always do pretty well in it,? Marshall head coach John Mercer said. ?I hope we can continue our streak of good results at this tournament this weekend.?
In addition to Marshall?s talented crop of talent in the field, the tournament consists of other top players from schools in the East Region. The singles finalists and doubles champion from this event will earn spots in the November 4-7 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships at the University of Michigan.
The top seeds in the Regional are: Ramona But of Maryland, Megan Muth of William and Mary, Courtney Bergman of Harvard, Marianna Yuferova of Virginia Commonwealth, Olga Borisova of Virginia Commonwealth, Susanna Lingman of Harvard, Megan Molton-Levy of William and Mary and Anat Elazari of Virginia Tech. Kroh is in the draw for featuring players 17-32 for the Herd.
?This really gives Ashley a chance to earn a high regional ranking if she does well,? Mercer said. ?It?s really a great opportunity for all three of them to go out and show what they can do against some very tough, quality opponents. Hopefully, they can come out with some high-caliber wins.?
In addition to singles action, Hock and Kroh will get their first chance to play doubles together this weekend at the East Regional.
?This is a great opportunity for Ashley and Danielle to face some really good doubles teams and we can see how they do together,? Mercer said. ?There?s some really good doubles duos in our region and hopefully we?ll have another one of the best.?
Last season, Kroh and partner Jessica Johnson showed just how good teams from the East Region are when they advanced to the finals of the NCAA tournament in Athens, Ga., before losing to UCLA 6-4, 6-4.
Seventeen ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women are taking place over these last two weekends of October at campuses throughout the country.
The 2004 ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, the nation?s premier collegiate indoor tennis tournament, is the second of three national championship events for college tennis this season. The first events ? the Riviera/ITA Women?s and IcyHot/ITA Men?s All-American Championships ? were held earlier this month, and the third event is the season-ending, NCAA Championship in May. The ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships feature a 32-player singles field and 16-team doubles field for men and women, including: qualifiers from these Wilson/ITA Regional Championships held across the country, the ITA National Small College champions, top performers from the ITA All-American Championships and at-large card selections made by the ITA National Tournament Committee. Overall, more than 7,000 players from nearly 600 schools participate annually in the ITA Regional and National Intercollegiate Championships.
Herdzone.com will have the Herd?s results from the East Regional at the end of play each day.
