2/21/2004

Junior Lille Nzudie went 4-0 in singles an doubles play for the Herd this weekend.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Marshall University women?s tennis team continued its successful weekend with a complete 7-0 sweep of Princeton University, Saturday, at the Penn State Tennis Center.

?This was a great weekend for Marshall Tennis,? head coach John Mercer said. ?We were able to defeat two solid teams in our region, and the girls keep improving and showing their mental toughness?

For the fifth straight time, Marshall has opened a match by clinching the doubles point. In the number one singles position No. 14 ranked senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) defeated Darcy Robertson and Vanti Bhargava with an impressive 8-1 victory. Senior Alice Sukner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) were victorious in a hard fought battle against Princeton?s Jessica Siebel and Alex Kobishyn to clinch the doubles point for the Herd.

Marshall followed up the doubles point with a sweep of the six singles matches and winning five of six in straight sets. No. 62 Johnson, Sukner, Nzudie, Kroh and junior Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) all claimed straight set victories over their opponents. Junior Joelle Good (Zurich, England), in the only match that went three sets, defeated Rankin Williams in the number five singles position 2-6, 6-3, 6-0.

The win marks Marshall?s fourth consecutive victory and second over an east region opponent. The Herd now move to a 4-2 record overall.

Marshall will look to continue its winning streak in the home opener against the University of Toledo at 1:00 p.m. and the University of Pittsburgh at 5:00, Saturday Feb. 28 at the Henderson Center Tennis Courts.
