Winthrop Invitational Next Trip for Softball
3/10/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University softball team will make a run for four in a row, when they take their winning streak to Rock Hill, S.C., for the Winthrop Invitational, March 12-14.
Marshall (11-9) will take on UNC-Wilmington and Monmouth on Friday, Texas A&M Corpus Christi and Providence on Saturday and conclude with championship play on Sunday.
The Herd is led by Mid-American Conference Pitcher of the Week, Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) on the mound. The junior hurler boasts a 1.35 ERA to go along with a 6-3 record. Nielson has held offensive opponents to a .207 batting average and has amassed 49 strikeouts so far this season.
Bats had the opportunity for a revamping this past weekend at the 2004 Ramada Marshall Softball Classic. Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.), picked up a MAC Player of the Week nod for her 8-for-18, five double and eight RBI performance. The sophomore also stole three bases and boosted her batting average to .333. She was surrounded by a home run-hitting Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) and a placement hitter, Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) With a pair of long balls in the tourney, Wintter pushed her home run total to five in 2004, while Davenport totaled 13 hits in twenty attempts.
MU will have the chance to avenge an earlier loss to the UNC-Wilmington Seahawks that occurred in the Triangle Classic. Marshall lost 2-1 in the eight inning affair moving the all-time series to 3-2-1.
Texas A&M CC is a first time opponent for the Marshall softball program, as well as Monmouth. MU leads the series with Providence, 1-0-1.
