LONG BEACH, Calif. - The Marshall University women?s tennis team was defeated today by 64th ranked Long Beach State University, 3-4.
Marshall (8-3, 1-0 MAC) started off the match by taking the doubles point and giving the Herd a 1-0 lead. The 13th ranked doubles pairing of senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) continued their success by defeating Nicole Bouffler and Sandra Rocha in the number one doubles slot, 8-3. The win marks the duo?s tenth consecutive doubles victory this season. Senior Meghan Skalsky (East Lansing, Mich.) and junior Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) topped Lindsay Marvel and Krystina Katayama 8-3 to secure the doubles point for the Herd.
In singles action, the 49ers claimed four of the six singles matches, including a hard fought battle between MU?s Hock and LBSU?s Emmanuelle Tabatruong in the number six singles slot, to clinch the victory. Although Marshall put up a hard fight forcing the 49ers to three sets in the number one, two and six singles positions, they fell short of their ninth consecutive win. In the Marshall victories, Kroh won her ninth straight match with a victory over Rocha 7-6, 7-5 in the number three singles position. In the number four position junior Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) topped Long Beach State?s Lindsey Marvel 6-0, 3-6, 7-5.
Marshall will return to action on Tuesday when they face 65th ranked UC Irvine at 1:30 p.m.
