Softball Set to Square Off in Hokie Classic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University softball team will finish its early season tournament schedule this weekend as it faces off in the Hokie Fastpitch Club Classic at Virginia Tech, March 19-21.

MU (14-13) will battle Mount St. Mary?s and East Tennessee State on Friday, Virginia Tech and St. Francis on Saturday and conclude with old Southern Conference foe Appalachian State on Sunday.

The Herd will enter the game after two losses to UNC-Chapel Hill on Wednesday. Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) grinded out two of the four hits allowed by the Tar Heel pitching staff.

Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) paces MU with a .409 batting average and a Herd-high 32 hits so far this season. The senior knocked in her first run of 2004 in game two against UNC.

Mount St. Mary?s enters the contest against MU with 1-6 record. The Maryland-based institution is led by Maria Lutz, who boasts a .400 batting average.

The Bucs of East Tennessee State (14-12) went 4-1 in the Winthrop/Ringor Invitational
last weekend. ETSU fell to Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the gold tournament bracket.
The Bucs are led on the mound by Southern Conference pitcher of the Week Belinda
Barrera.

Saturday presents opponents in the form of Virginia Tech and St. Francis. Virginia Tech,
of the Big East Conference, has a 19-8 record, including wins over Ohio State and Herd conference rivals Central Michigan and Miami.

St. Francis (Pa.) brings a 2-4 record to Blacksburg. The Red Storm will be the second team from the Northeast Conference (Mount St. Mary's being the other) that MU will play in the three-day venue.

The Herd concludes with a noon battle with Appalachian State on Sunday. ASU (6-15) is led by Christa Hicks, who has five doubles in 2004 and leads
the squad in hits with 17.
