BLACKSBURG, Va. ? For the second consecutive game, the Marshall University softball team smacked eleven hits as MU dropped Appalachian State, 9-1, in the final game of the Hokie Classic at Virginia Tech on Sunday afternoon.

Marshall (18-14) scored in every inning but the third in a game that was cut short by two innings due to the Mercy Rule.

The onslaught started early as MU put together four hits and three runs in the top of the first frame when Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) and Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) were driven home by an Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) single to right field. Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) then singled in A. Williams to push the lead to 3-0.

Wilson picked up her second RBI of the game in the second inning by scoring Davenport while the fourth inning brought three more runs after RBI singles from Wilson and A. Williams and a J. Williams single and throwing error advanced Ashley Mitchell (Kennesaw, Ga.) home enhanced the Herd?s lead 7-0.

After Appalachian State (10-18) scored one and broke an Abigail Harter (Monmouth, Oreg.) no-hitter, MU tallied a two more scores in the top of the fifth.

Harter (3-6) surrendered one run on one hit and struck out four. MU benefited from five Mountaineer errors.

The top three of the Herd lineup (J.Williams, Davenport and A. Williams) accounted for six of the nine runs with the Williams duo registering five RBI in the contest. Wilson went 3-for-3 with three RBI.

Marshall will now look forward to a visit from 2003 Mid-American Conference Tournament Champion Western Michigan on Saturday, March 27. The doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field starts at 1 p.m.
