Men's Soccer Signs Maryland Standout
3/26/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University men's soccer coach Bob Gray announced the signing of three-time Maryland all-stater Ryan Russell, Friday.
?We are thrilled to have Ryan sign with us,? Head Coach Bob Gray said. ?Ryan has the potential to be as good, if not better, than Byron Carmichael (former Marshall standout). He is extremely talented technically, and has a great knowledge of the game.?
Russell, a midfielder/forward from Waldorf, Maryland, was a three-time all-state selection (2001-2002-2003) at Westlake High School and has earned multiple all-county and conference Most Valuable Player honors.
Russell plays club soccer for the Reston (Va.) Football Club that is ranked No. 1 in Virginia, Region 1, and second nationally. He also played for the D.C. United youth team in 2002-03 that finished the season as regional and national champions, and he was a member of the USL Nova Juniors, a national finalist in 2000.
The prep standout was a member of the Maryland State Olympic Development Program from 1999 to 2002 and the Eastern Regional ODP pool from 1999 to 2001.
Marshall's most recent signee has also found success overseas as well. Russell played for the Santarem/Cristal Cup Champions in Portugal in 2003 and for the Everton Cup Champions in England in 2002.
Russell was recruited by North Carolina State, St. John's and Maryland, among others.
