Marshall Tennis Tabbed as Mid-American Conference Preseason Favorite
3/8/2004
CLEVELAND, Ohio - Marshall University's women's tennis team has been tabbed as the preseason favorite to win the Mid-American Conference Championship in April.
"It is nice that the league's coaches recognize that we have a solid team," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "Hopefully, we can live up to these expectations and achieve our goal of winning another MAC Championship."
Marshall, the defending MAC Tournament Champion and returns four all-conference performers from last season in seniors Jessica Johnson and Alice Sukner, and juniors Ashley Kroh and Danielle Hock.
The Thundering Herd is currently 8-2 overall, and 1-0 in the Mid-American Conference. Marshall has won eight consecutive matches and owns wins over four nationally-ranked opponents already this season (Southern Methodist, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Minnesota). The Herd's #1 doubles team of Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh is also currently ranked eighth in the nation.
The preseason poll, conducted among the league's coaches, has Marshall picked ahead of Western Michigan, Eastern Michigan, Miami, Northern Illinois, and Ball State. Votes were tallied for only the top six spots in the 10-team league.
The 2004 MAC Women's Championship is set for April 22-25 and will be hosted by Northern Illinois University.
