HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ?Marshall volleyball head coach Mitch Jacobs has announced that Maria (Maggie) Arias, Uchenna (Uche) Ndubisi and Rachael Sterbling have committed to play for the Thundering Herd beginning with the 2004 season.
Arias and Ndubisi are both Indianapolis, Ind., natives that signed National Letters of Intent this week, while Sterbling accepted an invitation from Jacobs to compete at Marshall.
Arias is a 5-0 libero from Indianapolis Bishop Chatard High School. She led her soon to be alma mater to the city championship her junior season, the first of her two year varsity career. An Indianapolis Juniors Volleyball Club veteran, Arias teamed with Ndubisi to guide their squad to the regional tournament in 2002.
?Maggie brings a lot of energy and heart to our team and is a great libero,? Jacobs said. ?She will be looking to win that position here at Marshall.?
A product of North Central High School in Indianapolis and the aforementioned juniors team with Arias, Ndubisi was an all-conference performer at NCHS in 2002 and paced her team in blocks for two seasons. The 5-8 middle hitter also excelled in the classroom, securing academic all-conference accolades in 2002.
?Uche is an excellent athlete that will play the middle and right side for us,? Jacobs said.
Sterbling, a 5-6 defensive specialist out of Cincinnati, will graduate from Milford High School this June. She was selected to the Greater Miami Conference First Team and was an honorable mention All-City honoree her senior year. She was requested to play on the Cincinnati All-City All Star Team while securing best defensive player accolades on two occasions.
?Rachael is a solid athlete with good defensive skills,? Jacobs said. ?She is extremely enthusiastic to play for the Herd and we?re excited to have her join us.?
Sterbling, a former GMC Player of the Week, was also a standout in basketball at Milford, earning three varsity letters in the sport.
