HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall University softball team downed Toledo, 4-1 and 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field in Mid-American Conference action.

Game One: Marshall 4, Toledo 1

Marshall (24-14, 6-0) tallied nine hits to take out the University of Toledo, 4-1, in game one of the doubleheader on Saturday.

The Herd started early, gathering two runs in the first frame when Sierra Davenport (Tucson, Ariz.) and Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) scored on an error and a Leigh Wintter (Acworth, Ga.) RBI single.

Toledo (6-18, 1-5) threw a run on the board in the third when Erica Singer reached on a Herd error, stole second, and scored off a Gina Muratori RBI hit.

A run in the third and a run in the fourth would prove to be the only other scores in the contest as Wintter made it home after Sara Spenia (Las Vegas, Nev.) singled to center field and Davenport punched in her second run of the game after an A. Williams double, giving the Herd the 4-1 win.

Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) gave up three hits and one run in five innings of work for her eleventh win of the year. Amanda Luers (Dover, Ohio) pitched two frames for the save.

Game Two: Marshall 6, Toledo 3

Toledo rallied for three runs in the top of the seventh but fell short as MU grabbed game two of the doubleheader, 6-3.

After notching a run in the second inning, Marshall came up big in the third, stringing together four hits for five scores. Courtney Kacenga (Sierra Vista, Ariz.) singled to center field, stole second, advanced to third on a Davenport single and stole home for MU?s first run of the inning. A. Williams walked and a double steal would ensue, placing two runners in scoring position for the Herd. After a Wintter fielder?s choice loaded the bases, Sarah Wilson (Washington, W.Va.) sent a deep shot to the left field fence for a three-run double and a 6-0 lead.

UT registered three runs off of Luers, who came in relief of Sarah Chamberlain (Moses Lake, Wash.) in the seventh.

Chamberlain gave up one hit and no runs while striking out two for the win. The senior has now given up only three hits in her last two appearances while boasting a 6-1 record on the mound.
