Herd Tennis Trips Up Zips, 6-1

AKRON, Ohio.- The Marshall University women?s tennis team moved their record in conference play to 5-0 with an impressive 6-1 victory over the University of Akron in action at the LaTuchic Tennis Center, today. With the victory, Marshall improves to 15-3 on the year while the Zips fall to 7-10 on the season, 0-5 in conference.
?It is good to still be undefeated in conference play.? Head Coach John Mercer said. ?Now we will push forward and prepare for our match against South Carolina.?
Marshall opened the match with impressive victories in all three doubles matches. Marshall?s 16th ranked duo of senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) teamed up at the number one doubles position to defeat Irina Strembitsky and Diana Serafini 8-1. In the number two slot, MU?s senior Alice Sukner (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and junior Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) cruised to an 8-0 victory over Courtney Brenkus and Mindy Price, while the Thundering Herd?s senior Meghan Skalsky (East Lansing, Mich.) and junior Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) defeated Stephanie Miles and Jennifer Ales 8-2, to secure the doubles sweep for the Herd.
After securing the doubles point, Marshall followed by winning five of the six singles matches. In the Marshall victories, at the number two singles position Sukner defeated Serafini 6-0, 6-1, and Kroh defeated Brenkus 6-2, 6-0 in the number three singles slot. Herd Junior Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) battled Akron?s Price to a three set victory 2-6, 6-1, 10-7. Hock downed Ales in the number five slot 6-0, 6-1.
In the only Marshall loss on the day, 100th ranked Strembitsky defeated Johnson in the number one position 6-4, 7-5.
Marshall will return to action on Wednesday, April 7, when they travel to Columbia, SC, to face the University of South Carolina at 1:00 p.m.
