South Carolina Tops Marshall Tennis, 5-2

COLUMBIA, S.C. - The University of South Carolina women's tennis team dropped the doubles point on Wednesday against No. 46 Marshall, but picked up five single matches to clinch a 5-2 win at the Maxcy Gregg Tennis Facility.

Thirty-sixth ranked South Carolina improved to 13-7 on the season with the win, while the Thundering Herd falls to 15-4. The win, USC's third in a row, ended Marshall's seven match winning streak.

In doubles, Magda Wojdylo and Ayako Suzuki picked up South Carolina's only win with an 8-5 win over Danielle Hock and Megan Skalsky at number three doubles. Marshall's Alice Sukner and Lille Nzduie defeated Carolina's Fallon Koon and Christyn Lucas at number two doubles, 8-5, and the Thundering Herd clinched the match at number one doubles where the 28th-ranked pair of Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh posted a 9-8(5) win over Danielle Wiggins and Laura Ganzer.

The Gamecocks would lose the doubles point, but picked-up four single matches to get the win. USC's Fallon Koon evened the match up at one point a piece by winning 6-3,6-2 at number five singles over Joelle Good.

Justine Walsh then gave the Gamecocks a 2-1 lead after defeating Danielle Hock 6-1,6-1 at number six singles.

The match was then knotted again after the Herd's Ashley Croh defeated Carolina's Laura Ganzer 6-3,6-2 at flight three. However, South Carolina's Danielle Wiggins,the 30th ranked player in the nation, won her sixth match in a row with a 6-3,6-2 win over the Herd's Jessica Johnson at number one singles, and South Carolina's Christyn Lucas went on to clinch the match for the Gamecocks with a 7-5,7-5 win over Alice Sukner at position two. The final win for Carolina would come at number four singles where Magda Wojdylo won 6-4,7-5 and made the final score 5-2.

Marshall will return to Mid-American Conference action when it travels to Ball State on Friday for a 1 p.m. match with the Cardinals.
