PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Marshall Women's Soccer team opened the season with a 1-1 tie against La Salle Saturday in Philadelphia, Pa.
At the 16-minute mark of the first half, La Salle's Heather Barclay scored the first goal to give the Explorers a 1-0 lead.
The Herd retaliated when junior Jen Short (Mentor, Ohio) scored in the 38th minute on an assist from Jamie Gruber (Hudson, Ohio) to knot the score at 1-1.
"I was pumped that I got the goal today," said Short, "The big difference between this year's team and last year's is that we were able to come back from a 1-0 deficit. We played tremendously better on all fronts today."
The Herd's Short missed on an opportunity from freshman Katie Watson (Woodbridge, Va.) in the first overtime period. La Salle dominated most of the offense during the overtime with five shots on goal.
During the second overtime both teams had opportunities to score, but neither team could convert and the game ended with the 1-1 tie.
Marshall Head Coach Chris Kane, who returned to his alma mater today, stated, "I'm pleased with our performance today. This was a great way to start the season because we were able to see thing we needed to work on, and they are all very fixable things. I'm very excited to play Drexel on Sunday."
Herd senior goalkeeper, Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, N.Y.) had a career high 13 saves.
The Herd will play Drexel at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
