HUNTINGTON, W.Va ? The Marshall volleyball team, showed signs of promise and signs of inexperience Saturday night in its Green and White scrimmage in the Cam Henderson Center.
With eight freshmen and four returnees, third-year head coach Mitch Jacobs? squad split into two teams and played a pair of three-game matches as a tuneup for Wednesday?s season opener at home against Radford at 7 p.m.
?The purpose of the scrimmage was to spot some major areas of concern prior to our first match and I think we were definitely able to pick out the good and bad,? Jacobs said. ?We like to have a strong service game and it needs a little work, but that?s to be expected this early. Our defense can be smoother and our passing needs some attention so we?re really going to focus hard on those areas leading up to Wednesday?s match.?
On the night, the white team featuring returners Amber Sims and Katie Stein, along with freshmen, Jan Bierce, Stephanie Cahill, Kelly-Anne Billingy and Jalicia Ross picked up the win 2-1 in the intrasquad scrimmage 30-25, 29-31 and 9-7.
Stein had 26 assists while Sims and Billingy recorded double-digits in kills with 11 and 10 respectively.
For the green squad with returners Nickie Sanlin and Christin Bimberg and newcomers Uche Ndubisi, Maggie Arias, Chelsea Lazar and Carlee Maddox, Bimberg and Maddox tallied seven and eight kills respectively.
Match two of the evening featured the projected starting lineup against a mix of coaches and non-starters with the starters picking up the win.
Jacobs was pleased with what he saw from his freshmen in the win and thinks the squad will be ready to go as it heads into regular season action Wednesday.
?It was nice to see our freshmen, especially Carlee, Chelsea and Steph, all show they can come in and make an impact for us right away,? Jacobs said. ?We saw some pleasing things out there tonight from everyone and we?re just really pumped up to get the season started on Wednesday.?
