ORLANDO, Fla. - Karim Boukhemis (Huntington, WV) scored a goal in double overtime to edge the Central Florida Golden Knights, 2-1, Friday night at the UCF Soccer Complex to give the Herd its first win of the season.
"It was an outstanding effort by our guys," Herd Coach Bob Gray said. "To beat a team that went to the NCAA Tournament last season on their home field is great for our program, it is also good to get a win against a future Conference USA opponent."
The Herd (1-2) got off to a good start in the first half when Kirk Gibson (Allen, TX) recorded the first goal of the season for the Herd to give MU a 1-0 lead. Mike Bourassa (Victoria, Canada) had the assist. The goal came at the 27 minute mark.
The lead did not last too long as Jon Imran of UCF (0-2-1) scored 12 minutes later to tie the game. Imran scored after a long pass from Rafael Teixeira.
From that point, the game went scoreless through the end of regulation and one overtime. Over that span, UCF tallied 13 shots, but was unable to get any past the Marshall goalies. With just over four minutes left in the second overtime, Boukhemis, with an assist from freshman Jeff Lenix (Westerville, OH), scored to give the Herd the win.
Even though Marshall was outshot, 20-5, they were able to hold UCF to one goal.
"It was a total team effort, I hate to single out any one player because everyone played great," Gray said. "Our offense showed improvement, our goalies were strong and the defense did their job to get the win."
Joe Nebel (Brentwood, TN) played the first 71 minutes of the game, allowing a goal in the first half before sophomore Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, IN) took over. Nebel made six saves while Terhune made four. Terhune played 39 minutes in goal.
Boukhemis and John Daniele (Columbus, OH) both had two shots while Gibson had the other. Jon Imran led UCF with six shots.
In the first game of the UCF Tournament earlier on Friday, Marshall's opponent on Sunday, Florida Atlantic topped Butler, 3-2. With both teams victorious on Friday, Sunday's game between Marshall and FAU will decide the winner of the tournament.
"It's pretty exciting for us to go into Sunday's game knowing what is on the line, hopefully our guys come out with the same intensity on Sunday and we can win the tournament," Coach Gray said.
The deciding game between the Herd and Florida Atlantic will take place at 11 a.m. on Sunday. Herdzone will have an update after the game.
