HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall volleyball team got back on the winning track Friday night in the Cam Henderson Center with a 3-0 (30-19, 30-25, 30-21) victory against the Morehead State Eagles.
?It was a good win tonight,? Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. ?It was a good night against a good team. They can play some ball so it?s good to get back in the win column.?
Marshall and the Eagles will square off again Saturday night in Morehead, Ky., and Jacobs said he knows that even though the Herd picked up the 3-0 win tonight, the Eagles will be tougher on their home floor.
?We?re going to have to play a lot better than we did tonight against them tomorrow,? Jacobs said. ?They didn?t play as well as they?re capable of, but I know we can be better too.?
The Herd evened out its record to 3-3 on the season with the win, while the Eagles dropped to 1-4 on the year.
In game one, Marshall pulled away behind the service game of Christin Bimberg (Schwerin, Germany). The sophomore took over the serve with the Herd up 15-13 and Marshall tacked on 10 to its lead to run the score to 25-13 before the Eagles were able to regain serve. Bimberg finished the night with three service aces and kept the Eagles off balance.
In game two, the Herd and Eagles were knotted up at 10-10, but a block by Nickie Sanlin (Fairview Heights, Ill) got the Herd rolling and it never trailed again in the game. Marshall climbed out of a 4-0 hole at the start of game three and used several errors by Morehead to gain momentum and pull away for the win.
The Herd also picked up strong performances from freshmen Stephanie Cahill (Louisville, Ky.) and Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad). Cahill had 10 kills and 10 digs on the night for a double-double and a .316 hitting percentage. Billingy notched 13 kills on the night. Junior setter Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) tallied 32 assists on the evening for the Herd.
Morehead State was led by Jennifer Kennedy with 10 kills.
The Thundering Herd and the Eagles are set to do battle again Saturday night at 7 p.m. from Wetherby Gym in Morehead, Ky.
