Herd Drops Final Two Matches in Inn Tower Invitational

9/18/2004

MADISON, WIS.- After outlasting Cincinnati in a five-game thriller Friday night, the Marshall volleyball team came up short in its final two matches of the Inn Tower Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin.

In game one, Wisconson downed the Thundering Herd 3-0 (19-30, 19-30, 24-30). Freshman Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) led Marshall with nine kills in the loss.

In game two, the Virginia Cavaliers came away with a 3-1 win (30-28, 26-30, 30-27, 30-26) to improve to 10-2 on the year. Nineteen service errors led to the Herd's doom against the Cavaliers. Billingy led the Herd with 29 kills in the contest. Freshman Stephanie Cahill(Louisville, Ky.) had 15 kills and junior Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) had 12 kills in the loss. Junior setter Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) had a match-high 59 assists against the Cavaliers in final match of the Herd's visit to her home state.

Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs was pleased with the way the team played in the Virginia match, but said it didn't take care of its serve.

"We played well enough to beat Virginia, but we didn't serve well at all, that was the determining factor," Jacobs said. "We would have liked to have had two wins today, but overall it was a great tournament for our girls to experience."

The host Wisconsin Badgers went 3-0 in the Inn Tower Invitational to win the tournament crown.

The Thundering Herd (5-5) will return to action Wednesday night, Sept. 22, when it plays host the Xavier Musketeers at 7 p.m. in the Cam Henderson Center.
