HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Thundering Herd volleyball team came together in a well-balanced effort to thunder through the Xavier Musketeers, 3-0 (30-28, 30-26, 30-24) Wednesday night in the Cam Henderson Center.
?It was great to get the win over a very good, very well-coached team that?s been on a roll lately,? Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. ?It was good to see our team really come through and pull together to put an end to Xavier?s four-match win streak.?
Marshall improves to 6-5 on the season with the win while Xavier falls to 6-6. Marshall is now a perfect 3-0 on the Henderson Center floor this season with three-straight 3-0 sweeps.
The Herd jumped out to an early lead in game one before the Musketeers mounted a comeback to take the lead at 15-14. The teams swapped points for most of the latter half of game one before Marshall used a Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) kill and a Xavier attack error to get the 30-28 win.
In game one, junior setter Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) picked up a service ace to tie her for third all-time in Marshall history with 116 for her career.
Marshall took over the lead at 3-2 in game two and never trailed the rest of the way before intermission. The Herd finished off game two on a kill by junior Amber Sims (Ney, Ohio) for the 30-26 win. Sims led the Herd with 13 kills and a .375 hitting percentage for the match.
In game three, the Herd put the finishing touches on X-ing out Xavier with a commanding lead throughout the game. Game three was highlighted by freshman Stephanie Cahill?s (Louisville, Ky.) four service aces in the game.
For the night, Sims finished with 13 kills, Billingy had 12 kills and Cahill was next in line with nine and a .300 hitting percentage. Cahill had six total service aces on the night. Stein had 40 assists and 10 digs for a double-double and Christin Bimberg (Schwerin, Germany) had seven kills and 10 digs while Nickie Sanlin (Fairview Heights, Ill.) had seven kills and two block solos. Maggie Arias (Indianapolis, Ind) had 10 digs on the evening.
?I was really pleased with the way everyone stepped up tonight,? Jacobs said. ?Amber played very well after a slow start. Steph served the heck out of the ball and the whole team passed really well. I thought our ball control was excellent. But the biggest thing tonight was that everyone picked up there games and we didn?t wait around for Kelly to kill the ball.?
Marshall now gets set for the start of conference play when the Miami RedHawks come to town Sunday at 5 p.m. for the Herd?s Mid-American Conference opener.
