Herd Volleyball Opens MAC Play Against Miami RedHawks
9/25/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va ? The Marshall volleyball team thunders into Mid-American Conference action Sunday night at 5 p.m. against the rival Miami RedHawks at the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd (6-5, 0-0) is coming off a 3-0 victory against the Xavier Musketeers of the Atlantic 10 conference in its last match and is currently undefeated in the Henderson Center this season.
Miami enters the contest following a four-game loss to the Ohio Bobcats in its MAC opener to fall to 2-8 on the year. The RedHawks are a much improved team from last season and after battling the defending MAC champion Bobcats, in four Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs and company know they are in for a challenge in the Herd?s conference opener.
?Miami?s a very well-coached team with a lot of talent,? Jacobs said. ?We?re going to have to play very well and defend our home court. This is a big match for us to get a roll started as we head into conference play.?
Last season, Miami and Marshall split the season series with both teams winning on the others home floor. Marshall will look to keep its record blemish-free on the hardwood at the Henderson Center Sunday night and gain a match in the series that Miami leads 12-3 all-time.
Marshall is led by freshman Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) with 5.21 kills per game, good for a total that ranks second in the MAC. The Herd will also look to use its strong service game, where it has been out-acing opponents at 2 to 1 clip per game.
The RedHawks are paced by Jeanna Staun with a team-best 83 kills and a .299 hitting percentage.
Following the match against the RedHawks, there will be a pizza party for elementary aged children and fans are encouraged to bring their cameras for a chance to have a photo shoot with the Herd volleyball team.
