- Box Score
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? The Marshall women?s soccer team scored the first goal but Akron rallied for two of their own as the Zips dropped the Herd, 2-1, at Sam Hood Field on Sunday afternoon.
Kassie Hollman (Macon, Ga.) punched in the first score for Marshall (3-5-3) in the first period. MU goalie Ashleigh Woods (Penfield, N.Y.) went down two minutes later as the Herd narrowly escaped a Zip goal. Kai Nordness (Burnsville, Minn.) entered the game for the injured Woods.
Akron (3-5-0) then picked up their first score when Abby Holzworth netted a Naomi Thompson assist. At 40:28, Akron?s Rosella D?Arguma found Amee Thompson for the Zips second and deciding score.
?We let down,? junior Cara Hemmerich (Dublin, Ohio) said. ?We thought after that one score we had it.?
Both goals for Akron occurred in jumble plays in the box.
?I think there was a lot of mental mistakes?we have to take more chances,? head coach Chris Kane said. ?We need to step it up defensively. Any time you give up two goals, you have to be ready to put up three and we just weren?t ready today.?
Senior Ellerie Karl (Oakwood, Ohio) netted a goal with less than 30 seconds to play, but the goal was called off after a dangerous kick penalty.
The Herd and the Zips kept it even in the shot category, each tallying eight.
Woods re-entered the contest to start the second half and notched three saves. Akron?s Crystal Tabor made six stops.
The Herd remains in conference play this weekend as it travels to Ball State and Miami (Ohio).
?This week we need to work on our backs tracking the ball and following shots,? Kane said. ?Our forwards need to put up more at the goal.?
MU takes on Ball State on Friday at 3 p.m. in Muncie, Ind., before trekking to Oxford for a match-up with the RedHawks on Sunday at 2 p.m.
