Herd Volleyball Heads to Akron and Kent State

9/29/2004

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? It?s on the road again for the Marshall volleyball team as it heads to north central Ohio for a pair of Mid-American Conference matches against Akron and Kent State.

The MAC East Division battles will provide an early indication of where the teams stand in the division as the conference begins the early stages of sorting itself out for tournament time in November. The Akron match is set to start at 7 p.m., Thursday night, Sept. 30, at the James A. Rhodes Arena in Akron.

Marshall enters play at Akron with a 7-5 overall record, and the Herd is 1-0 in conference play after downing the Miami RedHawks in an exciting five-game match Wednesday night in the Cam Henderson Center.

The Zips are 8-6 overall and 0-2 in the MAC after dropping a 3-1 contest to Western Michigan Tuesday night. The Herd and Zips split during the regular season, each winning at home. However, Marshall took down the Zips 3-0 in the MAC tournament semifinals.

After Thursday?s tilt with the Zips, the Herd will take the short trip to Kent State to take on the Golden Flashes Friday evening at 7 p.m.

Kent State was picked second, just ahead of the Herd in the MAC preseason East Division poll. Marshall downed Kent 3-2 in Huntington last season in the last meeting between the two schools.

The Thundering Herd is led by freshman Kelly-Anne Billingy(Trincity, Trinidad). She is coming off the best performance of her young career. The 6-3 outside hitter tied a Marshall single match record with 30 kills and finished with a .407 hitting percentage, 12 digs, five service aces and three blocks. Junior setter Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) is coming off a season-high 61 assists against the RedHawks.
