RICHMOND, Ky. - It was a rainy trip to Eastern Kentucky for the Marshall volleyball team, but the squad didn't bring much thunder as the Colonels of EKU downed the Thundering Herd 3-0 (30-18, 30-23, 30-23) at Paul S. McBrayer Arena Tuesday night.
The loss drops the Thundering Herd to 2-3 on the season, while EKU improved to 5-1. The win was the fifth straight for the Colonels and the 700th in the volleyball program's history.
It was a sluggish start for the Herd as the Colonels started with a 30-18 win in game one. In game two, Marshall hung close for the first portion of the match until EKU pulled away for the 30-23 win. In the closing third game, EKU continued its strong play and downed the Herd 30-23.
"Eastern Kentucky played great and we continued to play like we did against South Carolina," Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We didn't play with any energy or desire tonight."
The Herd started the season 2-0 before dropping matches against Wake Forest and South Carolina last weekend at the Demon Deacon Invitational. Jacobs said the Herd will need to pull together and play as a unit to get back on track.
"Eastern Kentucky has a very good team and we need to learn to play together as a team like they did tonight," Jacobs said. "We've got to stop thinking it's going to be easy and stop playing as individuals. We're young, but until we have someone step up as a leader and get the team together we're going to have more nights like this."
For the Herd, Kelly-Anne Billingy (Trincity, Trinidad) had 12 kills and setter Katie Stein (Sussex, Wis.) had 27 assists unofficially on the night. Official statistics will be available later.
Marshall will have a few days to regroup before the Morehead State Eagles come to Huntington Friday night for a 7 p.m. matchup in the Cam Henderson Center. The Herd will then turn around and head to Morehead for a match Saturday.
