HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team saw its three-match winning streak come to an end Friday night in a 1-0 defeat to UAB in Conference USA action at a soggy Sam Hood Field.
"It was a tough result for us tonight," head coach Bob Gray said. "Their goal was on something we knew they practiced and we had worked on it. But UAB is a good side. They are the defending league tournament champions and they have as much skill as any team we've played this year. We battled them and showed a lot of character to the end. I know there are no moral victories, but if we are fortunate enough to make the league tournament and we face them again, it could go our way."
UAB (8-5-1, 3-2-1 C-USA) scored the match's lone goal in the second half at the 53:14 mark on a Sandy Gbandi goal from five yards out after a scramble around the net. He was assisted by Two-Boys Gumede.
The teams played an uneventful first half, with both squads registering just one shot on goal. Marshall's Phillip Buffington (Jackson, Miss./Jackson) had the best opportunity late in the half with a low shot that UAB goalkeeper A.J. Robles dove to smother.
Marshall (5-8-1, 3-3-1) out-shot UAB, 16-14, and put six shots on goal, compared to five for the Blazers. Herd goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North) made four saves.
Marshall wraps up the home portion of its schedule at noon Sunday vs. Memphis. Senior Day activities will be conducted before the contest.
