HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team fell, 4-1, Friday night to SMU on a cool, rainy evening at Sam Hood Field.
The Herd dominated in many aspects of the first half, but the Mustangs went into intermission with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Mynor Gonzalez penalty kick in the 19th minute. Marshall out-shot SMU, 11-4, in the first half but was unable to score despite some golden opportunities.
The offenses began clicking in the second half. SMU (5-4-2, 3-0 C-USA) notched the first goal of the stanza in the 61st minute when Paulo da Silva worked his way through traffic and buried a shot to the lower corner of the net past Marshall goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Indianapolis, Ind./Lawrence North).
Four minutes later, the two teams lit up the scoreboard with three goals in just 42 seconds. SMU started the frenzy when Bruno Guarda headed in a Jeff Harwell free kick at the 65:32 mark. Marshall responded 15 seconds later with a carbon copy of the Guarda goal, as Kirk Gibson (Allen, Texas/Allen) headed a Michael MacDonald (Luton, England/Cardinal Newman) free kick past SMU goalkeeper Steve Sandbo. The goal was Gibson's fifth of the season, giving him the team lead this season.
The Mustangs came right back to take a 4-1 lead when Kellan Zindel scored an unassisted goal at 66:14 to end the scoring for the evening.
Marshall (2-7-1, 0-2-1) out-shot SMU, 17-15, for the night, but the Mustangs put eight shots on goal compared to the Herd's six.
Marshall is back at Sam Hood Field at 2:30 p.m. Sunday to take on Tulsa.
