2/11/2005
- Box Score
AUBURN, Ala. ? After being held scoreless through six, the Marshall softball team rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh inning to down Northwestern State, 6-4, on Friday afternoon in the Auburn Tiger Invitational at Jane B. Moore Field.
Demon shortstop Shay Hunt hit a double off the centerfield fence to score two in the bottom of the third inning. Northwestern State (5-4) moved the score to 3-0 in the fourth after the Herd?s third error of the game allotted another Demon run.
Consecutive singles by Noelle Adams (Wheeling, W.Va.) and Deanna Tourville (Oakley, Calif.) put runners on first and second for the top of the Herd order with no outs. Amanda Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) ripped a clutch double to right field scoring Adams and giving Marshall (5-1) its first run of the game. Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) registered her eighth and ninth career RBIs the next at bat with a two-run single.
Ashley Mitchell (Kennesaw, Ga.), pinch-running for Folden, then scored on a wild pitch to give Marshall the lead. Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) followed up with a screeching hit down the third base line to score two more and put the score at 6-3.
A double by Sarina Noack scored one in the bottom of the seventh but NSU could get no closer. The Herd, and starting pitcher Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.), would intentionally walk the bases loaded in an attempt to get the force and Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) came up with a diving grab as MU captured its fifth win of 2005.
Nielson scattered five hits in seven innings of work for her second win of the season. Morgan McMillin took the loss for NSU. The Herd faced three different pitchers in the seventh inning.
Marshall will take on Auburn this evening immediately following the conclusion of the Auburn/College of Charleston game.
