BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - Marshall came up short in a comeback bid against North Carolina State Sunday afternoon in women's tennis action at the Huntington Tennis Club. The Wolfpack went on to upset the No. 59 ranked Thundering Herd, 4-3.

North Carolina State improved to 1-1 on the season with the 4-3 win and the Herd falls to 3-2 on the year.

After losing the doubles point, Marshall had chances to take control of the match, but came up short in the end.

"We tried hard, they tried hard, but we just couldn't get that last point," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. " We're going to comeback and try harder this week at practice and keep working to get better."

Danielle Hock (Wigan, England) pulled the match even at 1-1 with a dominant victory at No. 3 singles over Elin Johannson, 6-0, 6-1, but N.C. State picked up a win from No. 121 ranked Barbara Orlay over Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) at No. 1, 6-1, 6-2. Then at No. 5 singles Danielle Stadlemanm rallied from down 4-1 in the first set to beat Marshall's Shannon Brown (Overland Park, Kan.), 6-4, 6-1 to give the Wolfpack the lead in the match 3-1.

The Herd wasn't ready to go away just yet however. Senior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) bounced back strong after dropping the first set, 3-6. Kroh then handled the Wolfpack's Virginia Romero, 6-2, 6-2 in the next two sets to pull the Herd to within 3-2.

The determining battle then mounted in No. 4 singles where State's Julia Roach went toe to toe with Herd freshman Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Schwartz took care of the first set 6-1, but Roach clawed back from 4-1 down to win the second set 7-5. The third and final set went back and forth like a chess match before Roach finally prevailed 7-6, winning the tiebreaker 7-5 to clinch the match for N.C. State.

Alizee Paradis (Quebec City, Canada) charged back after losing the first set at No. 6 singles to pick up a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 win for Marshall soon after the outcome had already been decided.

Marshall had to play without the services of senior Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) after team doctors decided to keep her out of the match for medical reasons. Good plays No. 3 singles for the Herd and No. 1 doubles as part of the No. 60 ranked tandem with partner Danielle Hock.

The Herd has a couple weeks off to regroup before a pair of ranked opponents head to Huntington. The No. 52 ranked Virginia Cavaliers take on the Herd Feb. 18, followed by No. 49 South Alabama taking the courts Feb. 20.
