HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-- Randi Nielson (Tucson, Ariz.) hurled a complete-game, one-hit shutout to guide the Marshall softball team to a 2-0, non-conference victory over Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday at Dot Hicks Field.

Nielson, a senior, surrendered the lone Colonel hit of the day when Alysha Jones poked a double to right center to lead off the game. Chanze Patterson advanced Jones to third base on a sacrifice bunt, but Nielson got the next two EKU (13-14) hitters out to end the threat.

Marshall (17-12) tallied the game-winning run in the bottom of the third on a Jessica Williams (Powder Springs, Ga.) single down the left field line. Thundering Herd right fielder Noelle Adams (Wheeling, W.Va.) scored on the play after getting aboard on a single, followed by a steal of second base.

Herd catcher Gina Guzzo (Virginia Beach, Va.) recorded her fifth home run of the season in the fourth to give MU the decisive 2-0 lead.

EKU starter Shelby Thompson was pulled after Guzzo?s home run. The Colonel sophomore allowed four hits and two earned runs.

Adams was the lone Herd player to register multiple base hits, going 2-for-2, while Williams, Guzzo and designated player Rachel Folden (Baldwin Park, Calif.) posted MU?s other base hits.

Marshall will return to Mid-American Conference play when it plays host to Akron in a three-game set this weekend. The Herd and Zips will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
