HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University volleyball team and head coach Mitch Jacobs announced the release of the 2005 schedule for the Thundering Herd in its inaugural season of play in Conference USA.

"We're very excited to kick off the Herd's inaugural season in C-USA and and we're looking forward to the challenges the 2005 schedule holds for us," Jacobs said.

The Herd opens the year with a match at former Mid-American Conference rival Miami (Ohio), on August 29 and will play three tournaments and a non-conference match against Big East foe Cincinnati before Conference USA play begins on Sept. 20.

"It's an exciting schedule," Jacobs said. "We've got Cincinnati coming here for our opening home match and we go to tournaments at Penn State, who should be undoubtedly preseason top five, and Maryland, a team that's won two straight ACC Tournament championships."

The Herd heads to College Park, Md., to battle the Terrapins, Rutgers and UT-Arlington in its first tournament on Sept. 2-3. The Penn State tournament is two weeks later and will feature the Nitany Lions, Penn, and Seton Hall along with the Herd.

Marshall and West Virginia University will also host a tournament at the Charleston Civic Center on September 9 and 10. The Blue/Green Classic will feature the Thundering Herd and Mountaineers along with Morehead State and VCU.

"It's great to be playing at the Charleston Civic Center and showcasing volleybal to the state of West Virginia," Jacobs said.

Following the non-conference bout with Cincinnati, Conference USA play begins as the Herd plays host to UTEP on Sept. 23 at the Cam Henderson Center. Marshall's other home dates in C-USA play are: East Carolina (9/30), Southern Miss (10/7), UCF (10/9), Tulsa (10/28), SMU (10/30), UAB (11/11) and it closes out the regular season with Memphis (11/13).

The Herd makes trips to New Orleans, Greenville, N.C., Birmingham, Ala., Memphis, Houston, Hattiesburg, Miss., and Orlando, Fla.

The Conference USA Championships are scheduled for Nov. 18-21 at a site yet to be determined.

Marshall is coming off of its third straight 20-plus win season since Jacobs' arrival and two appearances in the Mid-American Conference finals.
