Emotions were flaring during much of Marshall's seventh practice of fall camp Thursday afternoon on another hot day at Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
Early on, the offense continued to struggle, while the defense began to show more intensity. Practice ended with the offense and defense getting a shoving match after a couple of defensive players became more physical as practice went on.
First-year head coach Mark Snyder stressed that the guys need to get adjusted to the heat, but was happy with the intensity and emotion his team showed during practice.
"We started off slowly because of the heat," Snyder said. "We have some guys injured, but we finished with a frenzied pace."
The defense's intensity showed during seven-on-seven, blitz and red zone drills. But, there were some moments when the offensive unit did shine.
Sophomore tailback Ahmad Bradshaw had several breakaway runs, including one during the red zone drill when he bounced off two defenders into the end zone.
"I like guys who want to make plays and Bradshaw is that kind of guy," Snyder added. "He is a very special player.
Wide receivers Marcus Fitzgerald and Hiram Moore made a couple of spectacular catches, highlighted by Moore's one-handed catch in the end zone during the red zone drill.
Snyder was also pleased with running backs Gerwin Williams and Chubb Small who both had a couple of great runs during the seven-on-seven drill.
"I'm happy with Gerwin and Chubb and they will be a tremendous addition to the backfield, but they have a long way to go."
Marshall will have its second of five two-a-day practices Friday. Fans are reminded that they can get their second glimpse of the 2005 Thundering Herd at Saturday's scrimmage, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
