Marshall Women's Soccer to Host Thundering Herd Nike Classic

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall women's soccer team will host the first Thundering Herd Nike Classic at Sam Hood Field, Aug. 26-28. Duquesne, Jacksonville and Pittsburgh enter Herd country to square off in the season-opening weekend of MU women's soccer.

Jacksonville and Pittsburgh open tournament play at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 26. Following the 5:30 match, the Herd takes the field for its first home match of the 2005 season at 8 p.m. against Duquesne in the second all-time meeting between the two schools.

Marshall hopes to continue the success from Saturday's exhibition match when it defeated Charleston 7-1. Senior Cara Hemmerich(Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and sophomore Kate Heilich (Columbia, S.C./Dreher) each found the back of the net twice. Registering one goal apiece were senior Jen Short (Mentor, Ohio/Mentor) and freshman Emma White(Newport, Wales/Caerleon). The Herd took 23 shots, 11 of which were on goal. The last meeting between Duquesne and Marshall occurred in 1998, when the Dukes took the game 2-0. Duquesne, from the Atlantic 10 Conference, finished the 2004 season with a record of 9-10-1.

Marshall faces Pittsburgh Aug. 28th at 2 p.m. This will be the first meeting for Marshall and the Panthers. The Herd returns nine of 11 starters for the 2005 season, while the Panthers return all 11. Pittsburgh, of the Big East Conference, ended the 2004 season with a record of 6-10-1.

Prior to the Marshall match, Jacksonville meets Duquesne at 11:30 a.m.
