HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The University of Pittsburgh's Meta Haley connected on an unassisted goal 18 minutes into play to lift the Panthers to a 1-0 win over Marshall on Sunday at Sam Hood Field.
Herd Goalkeeper Kai Nordness (Burnsville, Minn./Burnsville) faced 14 shots, seven on goal and made six saves in the losing effort. Pittsburgh goalkeeper Jamie Pelusi made three saves in the contest as the Panthers moved to 1-0 on the season.
Marshall (0-1) started five freshmen, who provided three of the Herd's five shots during the match. In total the Herd was out-shot 14 to five by the Panthers.
The match was the season opener for Marshall which is playing its first season as a member of Conference USA.
The Herd takes to the road for their next two matches in Birmingham, Ala. Marshall faces Evansville on Friday, September 2 and Samford on Sunday, September 4 in the Samford Bulldog Classic.

Duquesne scored three unanswered goals in the game's last 37 minutes to pull away from Jacksonville, 5-2, in the first game of the Thundering Herd Nike Classic.
The Dukes took a 2-0 lead into the half, but Jacksonville immediately responded early in the second half with two goals of their own in the period's first seven minutes to tie the game at two. Duquesne then took the lead for good with their scoring run in the last part of the game, with the Dukes' Audra Mathews, Martine Gilbert, and Kelly Reed each adding scores.
Duquesne improves to 1-0 on the season, while the Dolphins drop to 0-1.
